The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) manages three areas in Howard County:

State - Managed Areas
Elma Wildlife Area Acreage/Description: 155 acres Timber, Floodplain Location/Directions: 4.3 miles West of Elma on B17 Game: Pheasant, Deer, Squirrel, and Waterfowl
Hayden Prairie Acreage/Description: 240 acres Native Prairie Location/Directions: 4.9 miles West of Lime Springs on A23 Game: Pheasant, Rabbit, and Deer
Turkey River Access Acreage/Description: 410 acres 1/2 Timber, 1/2 Upland Location/Directions: 1 miles South of Cresco on V-58, 0.6 miles East on Kings Road Game:Deer, Squirrel, Rabbit and Turkey
